“Burning in Crimea: Russian Navy Ship Destroyed by Ukrainian Strike, Satellite Images Reveal
Satellite images have confirmed that a Russian navy ship is burning in the Crimean town of Novofedorivka after a Ukrainian attack. The incident marks the first military dispute between the two countries since Russia’s 2014 annexation of the peninsula.
The photos, taken by the GeoEye-1 satellite, show a burning Minsk-class corvette ship surrounded by three tugboats. Reports indicated that the ship was hit by a missile fired from a Ukrainian coastal guard boat during a naval skirmish in the Azov Sea on Sunday.
Sources claim that the fire was caused by an onboard missile explosion. The crew commandeered the vessel to navigate away from further attacks and exit the conflict zone. The ship eventually ran aground near the shore of Novofedorivka, and all personnel were reportedly able to abandon the ship without injury.
Russia has yet to comment on the incident, though many suspect their reluctance is due to the government’s desire to maintain stability in the area. The last major military confrontation between the two countries was in 2018, when Russia captured several Ukrainian navy ships.
This latest event serves as an example of the heightened tensions between the two countries, and highlights the potential for conflict between them in the future. The incident has yet to be resolved and the fate of the Minsk-class corvette is still unknown. It is yet to be seen how both nations will address this latest dispute, or if further military actions will follow.
