Trump vs Harris: The Power Play for Military Dominance!

Amid the backdrop of a politically charged environment, prominent political figures, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, are effectively jockeying for vantage on the subject of military might. Their views, while often polarizing, are drawing attention to America’s defence policies and their influence on international relations. Known for his unorthodox approach, the former President, Donald Trump, sought to bolster the image of the United States as a global strongman during his tenure. Trump’s stance centered on an ‘America First’ policy, further pushing for a substantial increase in defense spending to fortify America’s strategic capabilities. Notably, Trump inked a $738 billion National Defense Authorization Act in 2019, which marked a new trend in US defense spending- the highest since the peak of the Iraq War. His approach also included the groundbreaking initiative of the Space Force as a separate military branch, highlighting his resolve to extend American dominance even beyond the earth’s atmosphere. Trump’s policies often stirred controversy, but they also brought into focus the pressing need to consider the changing global dynamics. His practices were driven mainly by the goal of maintaining supremacy, deterring potential adversaries, countering terrorism, and satisfying his voter base’s nationalistic sentiments. Compared to the Trump doctrine, Vice President Kamala Harris, on the other hand, has charted a different course, aimed at modernizing the military and recalibrating international alliances. Harris’s stance on military strength reflects the Biden administration’s broader perspective of ‘Diplomacy First.’ The shift focuses on international cooperation in pushing for global security, suggesting a proactive stand on renewing security alliances and international treaties, which were somewhat neglected during the Trump administration. Harris diligently pushes for a modern military that is ready to confront both traditional and emerging threats. This is visible in her vociferous backing for advancements in cyber warfare capacities, unmanned surveillance systems, and enhanced focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning. Furthermore, Harris supports policies that promote service members’ well-being, demanding measures to combat sexual harassment and discrimination within the military ranks. Both Trump and Harris’s initiatives underscore a critical, yet diverse view of military strength. While Trump stressed increasing defence spending and improving capabilities as a stand-alone power, Harris leans towards fortifying alliances and incorporating technology to ensure the military’s readiness in a rapidly evolving landscape. Their contrasting tactics, whether aiming to solidify domestic footing or build international relations, paint a vivid picture of American defense policies’ competitiveness and dynamism.
