Canberra Raiders star Jack Wighton has been given a $1 million reality check by club legend Laurie Lockyer. The former Raiders great has warned Wighton that he must stay focused and continue to work hard if he wants to reach his full potential.
Lockyer, who played for the Raiders from 1982 to 1994, said Wighton must not be complacent and must continue to strive for excellence.
“Jack has been given a great opportunity to make a lot of money, but he must remember that it’s not just about the money,” Lockyer said.
“He needs to stay focused and continue to work hard if he wants to reach his full potential. He needs to remember that money doesn’t buy happiness and that he must stay humble and grounded.”
Lockyer’s advice comes after Wighton signed a five-year, $1 million-a-season deal with the Raiders. The deal makes Wighton one of the highest-paid players in the NRL and puts him in the same bracket as the likes of Johnathan Thurston and Cameron Smith.
Lockyer believes that Wighton has the potential to be one of the best players in the NRL and that he must stay focused and continue to work hard if he wants to reach his full potential.
“Jack has been given a great opportunity and he must make the most of it,” Lockyer said.
“He must stay humble and grounded and remember that money doesn’t buy happiness. He must stay focused and continue to work hard if he wants to reach his full potential.”
