Testicle removed after excruciating training injury

English rugby league winger Jack Johnson left training with one of the worst injuries a man can suffer, but was able to make jokes despite going to hospital to have a ruptured testicle removed.

Johnson, who plays for the second tier Newcastle Thunder, was in good spirits despite the incident.

“Not my greatest Thursday ever, with the old testicle exploding at training,” he wrote on social media.

“Had it removed last night. Will be back soon just a little bit lighter.

“As the saying goes rugby league wins again.

“P.S does the swelling stay asking for a friend.”

The 26-year-old then spoke on Premier Sports ahead of his team’s game yesterday, where they were beaten by the York City Knights, 27-18.

“I ended up losing one of my testicles, and it was actually my favourite one, my left one, unfortunately,” he said.

“I just took a knee to the ball and the rest is history.”

He also told the Sydney Morning Herald that he had desires to play a season in either the Queensland or NSW Cup in the future.

“I’ve had mates go over to Australia, they’ve loved it and I think I’d love the experience – you only ever hear good stories, so it would be a great life experience,” he said.

While a ruptured testicle is uncommon, there are a few famous examples, including in 2004 when Roosters utility Chris Flannery played through the injury in the grand final a week after a painful incident in the preliminary final.

He took the field in the decider against the Bulldogs wearing a baseball protector and padding. The Roosters lost the match.

Tyson Frizell, Peter Wallace and Chanel Harris-Tavita, and Brett Kimmorley have all experienced the same injury, while English prop Paul Wood did not leave the field after an incident early in the 2012 Super League grand final, playing through the pain for almost the entire match.
