Internal ‘shift’ at Magpies leaves De Goey in strife

Jordan De Goey is increasingly likely to be suspended by Collingwood, with senior figures at the club upset by the “demeaning of women” in the video of him in Bali.

De Goey has found himself involved in yet another off-field scandal, with the saga threatening to take the steam out of a promising on-field season for the Magpies.

The 26-year-old did not report to the club for training on Monday, with a delayed flight back to Australia thought to be the reason behind his absence, and is not expected to train until Wednesday.

According to The Age’s Caroline Wilson, the tone inside the club towards De Goey’s actions has undergone a marked change over recent days.

“Two or three days ago, Collingwood were defending Jordan De Goey, even after the video came out,” Wilson told Nine’s Footy Classified.

“The demeaning of women in the video, that’s what’s really upset the club, upset Craig McRae, upset Graham Wright, upset Mark Anderson.

“They’re a lot angrier than earlier media reports suggested because younger media reps at the club were just getting it wrong on Friday and Saturday. There has really been a shift as more and more people have seen this video.

“I’m told by the club that the penny has dropped for Jordan De Goey. He realises he’s in real trouble. The attitude towards women will be reflected in the punishment. I can’t call it, but I do think suspension is very possible.”

Collingwood has copped heat for allowing De Goey to make the trip, despite teammates Darcy Moore and Jamie Elliott also understood to have travelled to Bali.

No one from the club has spoken publicly regarding the matter, a fact that left Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes baffled.

“I am staggered that Collingwood haven’t spoken yet in a footy world that moves so quickly,” he told Footy Classified.

“I requested someone on radio on Saturday thinking that’s enough time for them to delve through it. We’re now at Monday night and they haven’t spoken yet.

“They can’t absolve themselves of blame in all of this. The handling of (De Goey), allowing him to go is really questionable and the fact that they haven’t spoken.”
