Panthers coach hospitalised in ‘serious situation’

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary was hospitalised due to blood clots in his legs, Nine’s Danny Weidler reports.

When the 2021 premiership-winning mentor missed Penrith’s game against Newcastle on Sunday, the club attributed his absence to “medical reasons”.

“In this season of coaching madness and a merry-go-round, Ivan’s situation hasn’t really been focused on,” Weidler told 9News Sydney.

Ivan Cleary

“He has missed three games this year.

“I can tell you he was in ICU last week where they discovered he in fact has blood clots in his legs. So it’s quite a serious situation for Ivan Cleary and the Panthers.

“He is now getting treatment for all of that and, fortunately, he is now back at home and… hoping to be back working with the Panthers tomorrow.”

Cleary has coached the Panthers in almost 200 games across two stints, with the father of State of Origin halfback Nathan returning to Penrith ahead of the 2019 season.

The 51-year-old has also coached the Warriors in 154 matches and Wests Tigers in 43.

He led the Panthers to a 14-12 win over the Rabbitohs in the 2021 grand final.
