Republican Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler is attempting to gain Donald Trump’s endorsement for retiring Senator Roy Blunt’s seat, while pretending to be aligned with his values, but wrote a private letter to a constituent blaming and condemning him for January 6.
Hartzler also called for the “violators” of the Capitol building to be “punished.”
The letter begins by saying that she did not support his impeachment, but takes a very Rep. Liz Cheney-esque turn midway through.
“I condemn President Trump’s attempt to publicly pressure Vice President Mike Pence to act unconstitutionally by rejecting certain state electoral votes,” Hartzler wrote.
“I also wholeheartedly condemn the violent actions undertaken on January 6, 2021, by these so-called protesters. The assault on the United States Capitol building was appalling and something one would expect from a third world coup — not from our own citizens. It was thuggery, plain and simple, and these violators must be punished,” Hartzler continued.
“Finally, I condemn the President for his words leading up to, and during, the rally that took place prior to the certification process. The President’s actions were reckless, and only added increased tension and doubt to the many Americans looking for reassurance in our system of government. After a year of riots in our streets, COVID restrictions and health challenges, and a contentious election, our citizens need healing — not further actions which tear us apart,” the letter continued.
Hartzler added, in no uncertain terms, “it’s already been made clear: Congress certified the 2020 presidential results and this election is over. We owe it to our nation to move past these divisive tactics and work towards bringing America, and our communities, together.”
For all the condemnation, it seems a big strange that Hartzler allies are now angling for Trump’s endorsement.
Hartzler is facing challenges from Attorney General Eric Schmitt, Rep. Billy Long, Gov. Eric Greitens, and several other candidates.
A poll of 1,000 likely GOP primary voters in Missouri found Greitens has 26 percent support, Attorney General Schmitt with 20, and Hartzler with just 16 percent. None of the other candidates made double digits. A large 27 percent said that they remain undecided.
Trump has not yet endorsed a candidate in the race. The poll found that 49 percent of the likely voters will be more likely to support a candidate with Trump’s endorsement.
Schmitt is Missouri’s 43rd Attorney General and was a massive supporter of Trump’s policies during his presidency.
According to his website, “Eric was the first Attorney General to sue China to hold them accountable for unleashing the coronavirus on Americans. When Facebook was canceling conservatives and Google was using their platform to hurt consumers and businesses, Eric filed a lawsuit and launched a massive antitrust probe to stop Big Tech abuses. When voter integrity came into question, Eric authored and led the brief supporting the Pennsylvania Republican Party against the unconstitutional actions of the Pennsylvania courts, and he authored and led a brief in support of Texas’ lawsuit against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin before the United States Supreme Court, where 17 other states to joined him.”
Schmitt has also been fearless in taking on the Biden administration to hold them “accountable, protect the Constitution and the America First Agenda.”
“He has been on the front lines of every fight President Biden has waged against our jobs, our freedoms, and our safety. When President Biden canceled the Keystone XL Pipeline and thousands of jobs with it, Eric demanded it be reinstated and filed suit. When President Biden and John Kerry circumvented the Constitution to set a ‘social cost’ on greenhouse gases, a move that would cost not thousands but millions of jobs, destroy the energy and agriculture industries, and lower the standard of living for working families, Eric immediately sued him,” his website continues. “When Joe Biden halted Operation Talon endangering American lives, Eric pushed back against President Biden, urging him to reverse his order.”
Greitens, according to his website, “was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve as a White House Fellow, and in 2011 the Association of the United States Navy named him the Navy Reserve Junior Line Officer of the Year.”
“A conservative and a political outsider, Greitens was elected Governor of Missouri in 2016. He championed support for police officers, fire fighters, first responders, and veterans; ended lobbyist gifts, killed a pay raise for politicians, cut taxes, eliminated burdensome regulations, zeroed out corrupt insider tax credit schemes, and promoted the well-being of foster children and foster families. For his work as Governor, he was inducted into the American Academy of Achievement,” his bio on his website states.
